Story

In the busy chawls of Ghatkopar, the story of the corner house was well known. It was the house where the eldest daughter, 40-year-old Shraddha was almost burned alive by her husband.

40-year-old Shraddha had taken the punches, the constant emotional manipulation of her husband in order to protect her children - as long as she was the target, the children were spared. But the fire changed everything. Not only could she have died from the high degree burns but her children would have also suffered the consequences.

Rising from the ashes

Her brother, Sachin paid for her burn treatment and looking at his sister’s scars, decided immediately that she would live with him and his family. Shraddha took her two scared children, aged five and nine and moved into her brother’s home.

7 people began living in the tiny house located in Ghatkopar. One would expect it to be cramped and inconvenient, but the home quickly became the safest and happiest place Shraddha had ever known. Her children - Prathamesh and Dhanashree transformed under the loving care of a nurturing family.

Honouring old traditions

One of the many traditions that the family followed, was the annual trip to their village in Pandharpur to pay tribute to a temple there. The family believed that whatever they asked for there, would come true.

This year, Dhanashree had a special prayer to make. The 19-year-old was a model student who had won several scholarships that funded her entire Business Management Studies (BMS). However, her heart belonged to acting and she wanted to pray that her dream of becoming an actress would come true. She had turned down several offers from different agencies in order to focus on studying first and helping her family out financially, later.

The Beginning of the End

When the journey finally began it was like any other. Grandpa Suresh put on old songs on the radio and as was tradition, each family member recounted nostalgic village stories. In the company of each other, they all felt calm and content.

The Accident

It all happened in a heartbeat. One moment they were on the Pandharpur - Solapur Highway with Shraddha asking if anyone wanted snacks and the next, they were crushed between the hill and a ST bus. Shraddha, Grandpa Suresh, Sachin mama, his wife Savita, and their 14-year-old son Aryan, died away on the spot. Prathamesh passed away in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Only Dhanashree survived.

The 19-year-old is barely conscious and on the ventilator in Fortis Hospital, Mumbai. She is suffering from a brain shock and several fractures and has no idea that she lost her entire family to an accident. Or that she is an orphan. Dhanashree is in a critical condition and needs brain surgery as well as continued ICU and ventilator care to survive the grievous injuries that the accident has inflicted upon her. Everyone who knows her - her neighbours, relatives and friends have tried contributing as much as they could but are still nowhere close to the Rs. 20 Lakhs for her treatment. She has no one else but you.

… In the busy chawls of Ghatkopar, the story of the corner house is well known. It was the house where seven family members left and only one returned.

How You Can Help

What was supposed to be an auspicious event turned out to be the day when 19-year-old Dhanashree lost everything. On the way to visiting their temple in Pandharpur, the family of seven met with a fatal accident. Only Dhanashree survived. She is currently unconscious and needs continuous ICU care and ventilator support if there are any hopes of her recovering. However, there is no one she has left who can arrange for the Rs. 20 Lakhs for her treatment. She is an orphan and only has your kindness to depend upon now. Please contribute.

You can also share Dhanashree's story on Facebook and WhatsApp and help them reach out to more people like you.
